Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber hoping for ‘maximum psychological impact’ – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team driver Mark Webber has recently stated that he is aiming for ‘maximum psychological impact’ on Ferrari and McLaren at the 2011 Italian Grand Prix.
He claims that if RBR secure a win, then both of their competitors will get a major blow both mathematically and psychologically which is going to benefit the championship leaders a lot.
“McLaren and Ferrari will be going to Italy this weekend thinking they have as good a chance there as anywhere to beat us. So if we can pull out another strong result this weekend, it would be like what in football they call a six-pointer - when you beat
a team that is fighting for the same thing as you,” he said.
Despite the fact he himself is way behind his teammate and championship leader Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings, he is still hoping for the best possible results in order to get closer to him.
Webber is Vettel’s closest rival as he is just 92 points adrift as a result of which even his own chances of challenging for the title actively are low this year since there are just 7 races left in the season.
While personally talking about his title run, the Aussie claims that he is still in the championship and that he can still catch up with his teammate. However, he added that another victory for his teammate is going to dent his chances massively as well.
“I'm still in the championship fight with Seb [Vettel], albeit a long way behind in second position, so it's not good for me if he gets a top result at Monza. But overall for the team it would be brilliant,” said Webber.
The Italian Grand Prix is expected to take place at the legendary Monza circuit this coming weekend. It seems that McLaren and Ferrari might be able to challenge RBR for a win there since it is a high-speed track and RBR’s downforce advantage would be useless
in Monza. Either way, it is going to be an interesting weekend for the top running teams.
