Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber says nothing changed after engine mapping ban – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team driver Mark Webber confirmed after the Valencia Grand Prix practice sessions on Friday that nothing has changed since the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided to ban engine mapping.
Webber made this statement even before Friday that this rule change will not have much effect on the order or performance of each respective team’s respective performance. He has now confirmed that this really is the case as the timesheets were pretty much
the same as they were before with Red Bull Racing, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes GP and Lotus Renault GP securing the top ten spots.
“Nothing has changed on engine mapping. McLaren was not slow in Canada and neither was Ferrari, so not much has changed. On all of this subject we wait until Silverstone, as it is a normal GP in terms of the new regulations, at least for us anyway. For us
not much has changed,” said Webber.
However, Fernando Alonso’s fastest time of the session was 3 tenths faster than Sebastian Vettel who was slower than Lewis Hamilton as well. It was a Ferrari-McLaren 1-2 in the timesheets of the 2nd Friday practice session. The true pace of each
car will be more evident at the qualifying session and the final free practice session which will take place this Saturday.
“We used the medium tyres in the first session and they weren't too bad. The first session went okay; there were a lot of different people testing a lot of different things with different fuel loads. In P2, it was more straightforward,” said the Red Bull
Racing driver.
Webber had a pretty disappointing session though as he scored the 7th fastest lap time of the session which was 3 tenths slower than his teammate’s fastest run. The Australian driver has been unable to score some good results as compared to his
teammate especially during the races as a result of which, it seems that his chances of a better performance than Vettel are quite low this weekend as well.
