Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel clinches Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel won the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari on Sunday to mark his fifth race win of the 2011 Formula 1 season after six rounds.
The Monaco GP took a positive start, but the drivers had to follow a red flag for Renault driver Vitaly Petrov’s crash in the last six laps of the race. However, the interrupted race was restarted after approximately 15 minutes. The day was quite tough for
most of the drivers since the Monaco track has very tight corners.
Second placed Alonso was 1.1 seconds off the pace of the race winner, Vettel and finished the race in the second spot. McLaren driver Jenson Button struggled from the start of the race but successfully ended up in the third place for the team.
The Ferrari driver was quite happy with his podium finish. He discussed his race performance and said, “I think we gained one position with the first safety car [by overtaking Jenson Button for second place] and maybe we lose [the] victory in the last red
flag. I really think in the last eight or nine laps, the tyres on the Red Bull were struggling a lot - certainly in the last part of the circuit.”
The second driver of Red Bull, Mark Webber could not finish on the podium, as his car’s pace was hampered by the crash of Renault’s Vitaly Petrov during the closing laps. He was closely followed by Sauber-Ferrari’s Kamui Kobayashi, who was 26.9 seconds behind
Webber and completed his run in the fifth place.
McLaren’s driver Lewis Hamilton finished his run in the sixth spot. The rear wing of his car was damaged during Petrov’s accident and therefore, he could not finish higher on the grid. In addition, he was penalised for his collision with Williams’ Pastor
Maldonado.
On the seventh place was Adrian Sutil, who was one lap behind the race winner, Vettel. He finished his run ahead of Nick Heidfeld, who took eighth for the Renault.
Mercedes GP driver, Michael Schumacher retired out from the race after a few laps due to a fire in air box of his car. Petrov, Jaime Alguersuari and Felipe Massa were others who did not finish the race.
