Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel increases his lead after 2011 British Grand Prix
The reigning Formula 1 world champion and current championship leader Sebastian Vettel was unable to win the 2011 British Grand Prix as Fernando Alonso secured the first victory of the season for Ferrari.
However, Vettel was able to secure the 2nd place as a result of which he earned 18 points for his team and increased his drivers’ standings lead yet again as none of his closest rivals was able to score a better result than him.
The young German’s closest rivals before the British Grand Prix were his teammate Mark Webber and McLaren’s Jenson Button who were 77 points behind him in the drivers’ standings respectively.
Vettel secured the victory at the European Grand Prix and led the drivers’ standings by 186 points. The championship started to get more interesting though after the Canadian Grand Prix where Jenson Button secured the victory ahead of the reigning world
champion and came back in the championship quite prominently.
Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso was also scoring some good points and at the British Grand Prix after scoring a victory, the Spaniard ascended in the drivers’ standings and became 3rd with 112 points. He is currently 92 points behind the championship
leader and with just 10 more races to go in the 2011 Formula 1 season, the only way any of the top competitors can close in on Vettel is if he retires out of at least three races.
Mark Webber after scoring the 3rd place at the British Grand Prix is now 80 points behind his teammate in the drivers’ standings.
Vettel secured the 2nd place at Silverstone and quite impressively, this is his worst finish in the season so far. The current championship leader has not finished below the 2nd place at any race in the 2011 Formula 1 season up until
now.
He has been extremely consistent and is performing at his best with seven pole positions in nine races while Red Bull Racing still have a perfect pole position scoring record as Webber secured the pole at the rest of the two races.
With such a perfect car and race strategies, it seems that Ferrari and McLaren have no other option but shifting their focus to the 2012 Formula 1 season. However, moments like this keep the hope alive for them.
Alonso secured his first victory of the season and the two McLaren drivers Hamilton and Button have a victory each under their belt as well for this season, and even if Red Bull keep finishing right behind them throughout the season, the two most established
teams of the sport are still unlikely to secure either of the championships.
Jenson Button had to retire out of the British Grand Prix due to a horrendous pit stop error. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand had a remarkable race and he finished in 4th place even though he started from 10th.
Nevertheless, both of them are in 4th place with 109 points each. Errors from Red Bull are the only thing that can help Ferrari or McLaren in winning the drivers’ championship in the ongoing season. Let’s see how they fare in the remainder of
the campaign.
