Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel not aiming to seal the championship in Singapore – Formula 1
The reigning world champion and current championship leader Sebastian Vettel has recently stated that he is not aiming to seal the 2011 drivers’ championship at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.
Vettel just needs to seal the championship mathematically now and it is already in the bag for him.
“Looking at the championship obviously it is still some way to go. We are in first position, which I think we deserve to be in because we've been working very hard, we've made very few mistakes. We'll see I don't really think about the points and the gaps
at the next race. As long as we come out with a bigger lead in the points at the next race then we have down a good job,” he said.
Red Bull Racing have been dominating the 2011 Formula 1 season since the beginning but the main problem with their car is that it is reliant on downforce. The team outsmarted the rest of the teams at Monza this past weekend by running almost no downforce
at all on their car but they were obviously at some risk.
For Singapore however, Vettel is quite confident as it is a street circuit and the RB7 might suit the track as a result of which he might win his third race in a row which will secure his championship.
Despite the fact that his own teammate Mark Webber is also within the title’s reach at the moment, he has admitted that his chances of winning the championship are no longer in sight anymore.
“Seb won the race again and, although he is not quite champion again yet, we're all now effectively fighting for second place,” he wrote in his BBC column.
The reigning world champion is currently 112 points ahead of his closest rival Fernando Alonso and if he wins the race at Singapore, the championship would end mathematically. There will be just 100 points left for the grabs after that since just 5 races
would be left in the 2011 Formula 1 season after the Singapore Grand Prix.
