Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner believes championship is wide open – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner has said that the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship is still wide open and any driver in the top five or six positions can claim the title.
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has performed amazingly well in the season so far and is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 194 points and has a strong lead over his rivals. Moreover, he has been deemed as the strongest title contender in this
year’s championship fight.
On the other hand, Horner has said that although the Spaniard is presently at the top of the rankings but he believes that there are many races remaining in the season and the competition is still on.
Besides, he said that Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button of McLaren and their drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber cannot be excluded from the list of this year’s strong title contenders.
“The Championship is wide open,” said Horner. “It's just annoying Fernando keeps popping up on the podium at the end of the grand prix. You have to include Mark, you have to include Jenson, even Kimi isn't far off and of course Lewis. There's six races still
to go - 150 points still available, still a lot to play for.”
In addition, he said that after winning the Singapore GP, Vettel is feeling very confident for the approaching races. Above and beyond, he said that they are targeting to close the gap to the current leader in the drivers’ rankings, Alonso so as to defend
their championship title.
“Sebastian was 25 points down with two races to go in 2010, which indicates anything is possible for all the drivers. We need to keep taking points off Fernando, which ideally means getting a few more cars between us and him,” he added.
It will be important to note that the Milton Keynes based team has not dominated in this season as compared to the previous one in which the veteran German driver won 11 races. Nonetheless, their hopes are high and it will be thrilling to see how they show
up in the Japanese GP.
