Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz says they want to keep Mark Webber for 2012 season – Formula 1
Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz has said that the team is willing to keep Mark Webber for the 2012 Formula 1 season.
This means that the team is not offended by what the Aussie driver did during the 2011 Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
“Mark Webber will re-sign with us. This will happen for sure. He is very popular within the team, he feels very comfortable and it is an excellent relationship. He knows this and we know it. To be honest, Mark has no better choice than the fastest car and
we have no better choice for a fast driver,” he said.
Mark denied his team orders during this past weekend’s race. The team asked him to slow down behind his teammate, the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel in order to avoid any sort of accident. Webber on the other hand decided to follow his heart and
kept challenging the young German until the end of the race.
“Sebastian realised that Fernando Alonso was gone and could not be caught anymore, so he backed down. This let Mark close in. He would be a very bad racer had he not tried to attack and gain a position,” said Mateschitz.
Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing team principal also stated that this incident will not affect the negotiation between the team and Webber for a possible 2012 deal. Since Mateschitz has also stated that the team is going to keep Webber for another season,
it seems that the team is pretty much over that incident.
However, Mateschitz added that this decision is not going to be in the team’s hands only though as Mark is yet to reveal his decision regarding this matter and there is a probability that he might reject the team’s offer as well.
It is expected though that Webber is going to stay with the team but if he does not, then there is a probability that Lewis Hamilton or Kimi Raikkonen might join the team. Let’s see how the situation transpires in the days to come.
