Red Bull claim to learn from past and look ahead to the Turkish Grand Prix: Formula 1 News
Formula 1 Champions, Red Bull were confident of a good show in the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix, which will take place on Sunday, May 8, 2011. The team don’t have good memories from Istanbul Park, as their drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, had a
collision last year at the venue. However, team principal, Christian Horner, says that both drivers have learned a lesson from their mistakes.
Horner said, “Obviously last year what happened, happened. Lessons were learned from it and we are looking forward to going back to Istanbul. It's a great challenge of a circuit, especially Turn Eight. The whole team's looking forward to being back in action.”
The Brit further added, “We'll be going there to do our very best and it's a circuit that both drivers have gone well at previously. As we saw in China, tyres and strategy play a key role and it will probably be the same again this weekend.”
Red Bull’s team principal admitted of having issues with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) in the opening three races of the ongoing season. However, he was optimistic of sorting out all the issues before the next race, saying that the team had developed
a lot of understanding of the system.
The reigning Champions were unable to run the power boost system on their car in the Australian Grand Prix, but it didn’t cost them much as Vettel won the race by a convincing margin of more than 22 seconds. The team was well aware of the fact that it would
be impossible to win in Malaysia without KERS.
This is why Red Bull made sure that all systems on their car were functional for the second race of the season and the team managed to double their victories at Sepang. The event was not trouble free for the drivers though, as their power boost system stopped
working during the race and McLaren got a lot closer to them before the chequered flag was waved.
Problems continued for Red Bull in the Chinese GP as well and Webber was not able to make it through to the second-leg of qualifying. He was once again let down by the KERS issue and his chances in the race looked very slim. However, the Australian kept
his cool and performed exceptionally well in the race, finishing third.
Turkey is also one of the tracks where the power boost system will play a crucial role. It will be important for Red Bull to get all systems fully functional on their car otherwise their rivals will gain the competitive advantage.
McLaren have managed to win the race in China and have closed the gap significantly to their rivals. The upcoming race will be important for the Vodafone sponsored team and they will be eyeing a repeat of last year’s performance where both drivers, Lewis
Hamilton and Jenson Button, finished one-two respectively.
