Red Bull director Adrian Newey: Perfect car, driver and engine crucial for success – Formula 1
Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey has said that a perfect winning combination to win a Formula 1 race or a season includes a perfect car, driver and an engine.
Newey added that engines are somewhat the same in the 2011 Formula 1 season due to strict regulations of International Automobile Federation (FIA) but the cars and drivers are making the difference in performance.
Talking about the defending world champion and the leading point scorer of the 2011 season, Sebastian Vettel, Newey said that the young German is mature early into his career which is a good thing.
Newey said, “The very special thing with Sebastian is how mature he is at this age. Sebastian is remarkably level headed. He is a very private man and isn’t into the fame at all. He thinks a lot about what he does and rarely makes the same mistake twice.”
He further added that when a driver gets too much fame in such a short span of time, they usually get out of control and lose their head which was not the case with Vettel.
Vettel has won five out of the seven races and in the other two, he finished in the second place on the podium. Critics have said that the Newey designed RB7 has been the fastest car of the season and Vettel gets to drive it and is winning races with it.
Still Newey thinks that the car is nothing if the driver is not good. He said, “It is a combination of car, driver and engine. Only if all three factors come together will success be on the horizon. You need a good car and a good driver. You don’t win anything
without the combination of both.”
Red Bull are leading both tables in the 2011 season and are well on course to win both the titles halfway through the season but still, Newey stated that until championships are not won, he will not be satisfied.
The eighth grand prix of the 2011 season will be contested on June 26 in Valencia.
