Red Bull driver Mark Webber: DRS and Pirelli might spice things up in Valencia – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver Mark Webber has hoped that 2011 Formula 1 regulations such as the Drag Reduction System and fast-degrading Pirelli tyres will help spice up the Valencia Grand Prix on June 26.
The Aussie driver added that he would love to win in Valencia this year to open his account but he also stated that Red Bull are under some real challenge which is obvious from the last few races.
Webber, currently third on the drivers’ championship table, has never won a race in Valencia but for the 2011 season, he is very much looking forward to it.
He said, “Valencia hasn’t been an incredible venue for me in the past but I’m looking to try and break the duck this year. I quite enjoy driving the last sector of the track, as it’s got a really good combination of corners which are challenging. There’s
no reason why the car shouldn’t perform well there.”
Webber also added that the past few races in Valencia have not been so much healthy in terms of overtaking but hopefully this year things will change.
“It’s a circuit that’s yet to provide a phenomenal F1 race, but we’ve seen some special ones this year, so hopefully this is an opportunity for Valencia to add its name to the list,” commented Webber.
The first seven races of the 2011 Formula 1 season have seen a phenomenal number of overtaking moves being completed due to the new regulations that make the manoeuvre rather easy.
Although some drivers have shown concern over the overtaking aids for 2011, especially Sebastian Vettel who lost the race in Montreal due to DRS, yet Webber thinks the movable wing will be helpful in Valencia.
Along with the DRS, the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and fast-degrading Pirelli tyres have contributed to the large number of overtaking moves in the seven races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
It will be interesting to see how the regulations play in Valencia’s street circuit in a week’s time.
