Red Bull driver Mark Webber: Schumacher-Hamilton battle at Monza was unique – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said there was a unique fight between Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton in the early part of the 2011 Italian Grand Prix held on September 11.
Webber added that Schumacher had the speed advantage on the long straights during the Italian Grand Prix, as his MGP-W02 car is always competitive on the straights.
Both the drivers, Schumacher and Hamilton had a close fight with each other in the initial stages of the Italian race. The seven-time world champion drove for his third position in most of the part of the race at the Monza racetrack. After struggling on
the soft and medium compounds, he finished his Grand Prix at the fifth place behind Hamilton.
Webber commented, “He could position his car very cutely to try to keep him out. There were a few times when Michael returned to the normal line having defended. That's the point of interest because it's not what most drivers understand to be acceptable.”
The 35-year-old driver went on to mention, “One incident in particular stood out - out of the second chicane and into Lesmo, when Lewis had a clear run and Michael went across to defend and then came back again. Moving that many times was pushing the boundaries.”
On the other hand, Webber conceded the 2011 title and said that the championship battle is over for him after his retirement in the Italian Grand Prix.
After starting from the fifth place on the opening grid, he retired from the Monza race due to an accident. After his retirement from the Italian race, he dropped down his position in the drivers’ championship and now, he is sitting at the fourth place with
167 points.
Mercedes driver Schumacher has been impressive in the last two rounds of the 2011 Formula 1 season and has managed two consecutive fifth-place finishes at Spa and Monza. The German is placed at the eighth position in the championship battle with 52 points
after the Italian GP.
Let’s see how Schumacher manages the last six rounds of the ongoing season.
