Red Bull driver Mark Webber says he is not happy with team orders to slow down in British GP
Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver Mark Webber has said that he was not happy with the way his team ordered him to slow down behind Sebastian Vettel in the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Webber added that he was not doing much talking in the final few laps of the race but the team kept on directing him to give away the battle to his own teammate, Vettel.
Webber stated that although the Red Bull team is looking for points in the end, he was not going to give up the battle right there.
He also said that had Fernando Alonso crashed, who was leading the race at that time, he could have fought with Vettel all the way to the chequered flag.
Webber was right on the tail of his young teammate on a bit of fresher set of tyres. The Aussie was about to take the second place from Vettel when the Red Bull camp radioed Webber and told him to maintain the gap.
Webber stated, “Of course I ignored the team and I was battling to the end. I was trying to do my best with the amount of conversation on the radio. I wasn't doing much talking back, but I got a lot of messages coming my way, but I was trying to the end.
I'm not fine with it, no.”
He added, “[If] Fernando [Alonso] retires on the last lap, we're battling for victory. Four or five laps to go I started to get messages. Of course they want the points, but I also need to try to get some points as well.”
Webber’s anger is understandable as Vettel has extended his lead in the drivers’ table to 80 points. The Aussie is second on the table now with 124 points.
The next race will be contested in about two weeks’ time in Germany and it will be interesting to see how Webber responds to team orders, if there are any.
