Red Bull driver Mark Webber secures pole position for Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team driver Mark Webber has secured pole for the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix taking place on May 22, 2011 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Webber finished his laps with a fastest time of 1 minute and 20.981 seconds in Qualifying 3. He beat his teammate Sebastian Vettel, who completed his second fastest run in the qualifying round. Due to some Kinetic Energy Recovery System issues during the
session, he could not secure his first place on the grid, like he had done on all the previous four times of the current season.
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton was 0.980 off the pace and secured his third position for Sunday.
Local hero Fernando Alonso had some gear issues in the Final Practice session, however after fixing them before the Qualifying round, he successfully finished his session run in the fourth spot.
McLaren’s other driver Jenson Button will start the Spanish GP from the fifth place on the grid. Renault driver Nick Heidfeld was unable to run in Qualifying, as his car caught fire after 25 minutes at the start of the Final Practice session. His teammate
Vitaly Petrov ended his trouble-free Qualifying session and secured a sixth place on the grid.
Michael Schumacher, who was at the top spot in Qualifying 1, has dropped down to tenth place on the soft compound tyres. His teammate Nico Rosberg had a trouble-free run in the Qualifying and ended the session in the seventh spot.
Ferrari’s second driver Felipe Massa was 1.902 seconds off the pace and completed his session ahead of the Williams-Cosworth’s Pastor Maldonado, who will start his race from ninth position on the grid.
Most of the drivers used only soft tyres instead of the hard ones. On the other hand, Pirelli has predicted a two-stop strategy for Sunday’s race.
After a successful Qualifying round of at Barcelona, the teams are ready to perform strongly on Sunday. Let’s see how it transpires.
