Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel comfortable with supersoft Pirelli tyres – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team driver Sebastian Vettel feels comfortable after running on the new supersoft Pirelli tyres in the free practice sessions of the Monaco Grand Prix on Thursday.
Before the start of this weekend, Pirelli was expecting that their new compounds would prove good for at least 10 laps in Monaco due to the high degradation rate of tyres. However, they lasted for more than 20 laps.
The current world champion believed that it was easy to get a grip on both tyres and they fared well during his 23 laps.
Vettel said that not only good confidence is required for the best race on the track, having the fastest car is also a prerequisite for the driver to reach the front position. The German is looking forward to his victory this weekend in Monaco, as he believes
he has a faster car than everyone else.
The 23-year-old German said, “We will see how the conditions are on Sunday. If it's similar to today then the super soft seems to be preferred tyre for qualifying. You can extract most time from it, so no dramas today.”
The German added that he observed in practice sessions that the supersoft tyres were favourable for good qualifying rounds, as more time can be taken out from them.
Webber completed 23 laps in the second practice session on both supersoft and hard compound tyres in Monte Carlo. After the session, he said that these tyres were durable as well as supportive for him during the practice time.
Not only Vettel, his teammate Mark Webber is also satisfied with the new compound tyres by Pirelli. However, Webber could not perform well on Thursday since his car developed a gearbox issue in the morning session and then in the second session, he was having
issues with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System of his car.
He said, “We missed 40 laps this morning and you are not going to get that back overnight, so we need to get back into the groove a little bit on Saturday morning and hopefully we can get back in business on Saturday afternoon, and then recover.”
With four victories already in the five rounds of the season so far, Vettel looks the favourite for the Monaco Grand Prix. However, he will face tough challenge by the McLarens and Ferraris.
