Red Bull duo of Vettel, Webber dominate first free practice session of Spanish GP – Formula 1 news
The dry and sunny first Free Practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix of ninety minutes is done and dusted in Barcelona and Red Bull’s duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel have managed a 1-2 finish.
Webber did 27 laps in total with a fastest lap time of 1 minute and 25.142 seconds. He had an almost trouble free day and used some of the planned updates in his RB7.
The defending champion Vettel was just a fraction slower than his teammate and managed to complete only 20 laps.
Remarkably, Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was able to post a fastest time that would place him in third place in the final standings. The German did a lap time of 1 minute and 26.379 seconds while completing 29 laps. His teammate Michael Schumacher managed to complete
32 laps with a fastest of 1 minute and 27.016.
The fourth place went to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso who recently confirmed his stay at Ferrari until the 2016 season. Alonso showed some speed to stay ahead of his Brazilian teammate Felipe Massa who finished 16th.
Sauber’s rookie Sergio Perez finished fifth and did a fastest time of 1 minute and 26.738 seconds. Perez completed 26 laps while his teammate Kamui Kobayashi did 23 laps and ended up in 17th place.
McLaren’s duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button was able to book a seat in the top ten. Hamilton finished sixth and Button managed a ninth spot.
Renault’s Nick Heidfeld once again showed that their car has some guts to compete against some bigger teams. Heidfeld was able to complete some 20 odd laps and carried out some important tests on the new parts of the car. Heidfeld’s teammate, Vitaly Petrov
finished 11th.
The last of the top ten finishers was Williams’ Rubens Barrichello with a fastest lap time of 1 minute and 27.212 seconds.
The second Free Practice session of the Spanish GP will be contested later on Friday and some new upgrades will be ready to hit the road.
