Red Bull must retain its pace in order to secure Sebastian Vettel in the team – Dietrich Mateschitz
Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has been extremely happy after Sebastian’s surprising and astonishing performance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in order to secure the 2010 drivers’ title for Red Bull. Red Bull has been able to secure both titles this year
and this is a groundbreaking result for the team since the 2010 Formula 1 season was their 6th season in the sport and the team has made its mark with established team’s like McLaren and Ferrari.
Dietrich hopes that the team produces similar results next season and keeps the 2010 world champion interested in the team. He wants to avoid the risk of losing Sebastian to another team and therefore, the team has already started thinking of ways to produce
a championship-winning car for 2011.
“He will be a world champion a few times more provided he is sitting in the right car. We will do our best to give that car to him. If we are not able to, we will have to let him go somewhere where he can be champion again,” Mateschitz told an Austrian television
channel.
Vettel was brought to the spotlight by Red Bull’s driving training programme and as a result, the German driver is now the youngest Formula 1 world champion even though he had a lesser chance than Fernando Alonso of winning the title at the grand finale
in Abu Dhabi. Mateschitz hopes that Sebastian stays loyal to the team and produces similar results season after season behind the wheels of Red Bull.
Sebastian Vettel took the title with a lead of 4 points over Fernando Alonso. It was a very tough race but one has to admit, Red Bull got lucky at the Yas Marina Circuit past weekend as Fernando Alonso took a pathetic pit stop in order to gain some advantage
by shifting to the hard tyres but it obviously, turned out the other way. On top of that, Fernando got stuck behind Renault driver Vitaly Petrov and was unable to overtake him throughout the race as it seemed that the time Fernando used to gain over Vitaly
in the tougher part of the circuit was lost in the long straights.
Renault was clearly much faster than Ferrari in the long straights and it seems that the same team that helped Fernando win two world titles just cost him his third title in the very final race. Mark Webber was in a similar scenario as Alonso and many people
believe that Red Bull sent Mark into the pits in order to mislead the Spaniard and as a result, enable Sebastian to race in a potential position of winning the title.
Nevertheless, the 2010 world champion’s contract with Red Bull runs only until the end of 2011 with an option for 2012 but Red Bull is interested in extending this deal through 2015. Willi Weber, one of the most renowned driver managers in the sport believes
that this contract will cost both the team and Sebastian drastically in the future as it is never easy to predict what the future holds in Formula 1.
“I have a feeling that Michael [Schumacher] and I had the best time in F1, with which you can no longer compare. Today there is less money available,” Weber told
the media.
However, this season was absolutely amazing for Red Bull as they were clearly the fastest team on track and with Sebastian Vettel as the new drivers’ world champion, the team is now more determined to work on their 2011 car and produce the best mechanical
and technical package the sports has to offer.
