Red Bull not surprised by FIA’s decision regarding the overtake issue – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing has stated that they are pleased but not surprised with the FIA’s decision regarding Sebastian Vettel’s overtake during the Brazilian Grand Prix last weekend.
“We are pleased, but not surprised, that the FIA has confirmed there is no case to answer regarding the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix,” Red Bull said in a statement. “We are extremely proud of Sebastian's incredible achievement and his third historic title,
which makes him the youngest ever triple World Champion.”
When Ferrari requested the FIA for a clarification of the issue, the governing body had briefly replied that there was no case to answer along with a summary of the rules which proved Vettel had done nothing wrong.
A recent footage from the in car feed of Vettel’s Red Bull car has clearly revealed the green flag which had not been visible in previous videos. FIA had already confirmed that Vettel had passed the green flag before he completed the overtake and then reached
the green light board.
Since the Red Bull driver obeyed the green flag according to the rules of the race that the driver is to follow the immediate track changes first, Vettel will be maintaining his championship. The issue had arisen due to the display of Vettel’s dashboard
showing that he was in the no overtake zone under the yellow flags.
A statement from Ferrari told that their intention was not to challenge the race result but to clarify rules and the confusion of their fans who had contacted them with their questions. The team says they consider the case to be closed as they respect all
decisions taken by the FIA.
If Vettel had been found at mistake, he would have been punished with a 20-second penalty putting him in eighth standing. As a result Vettel would have lost the title to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by one point.
Vettel had to deal with many problems during the race including his first lap collision and loss of radio communication but still finished sixth securing his championship. On the other hand, Alonso failed to win over Vettel despite his second place on the
podium.
