Red Bull not to prefer Webber over Vettel for the Title– Horner
Red Bull’s Team principal, Christain Horner has said that the team would not prefer Mark Webber over Sebastian Vettel for securing this year’s drivers’ title.
Vettel is 31 points short of the current championship leader Lewis Hamilton while 28 points short of his teammate Mark Webber. McLaren also seem to have the same thing on their minds but it was quite clear at Spa that the team will not favor Hamilton to secure the title and ultimately driver equality will remain between him and Jenson Button.
Red Bull boss, Horner was asked by the media if Vettel would be playing sidekick to Webber now as he doesn’t have a higher chance of winning the title; he replied that team orders are not allowed but if the team does that that would be team orders. On the other hand, Webber agreed with his boss and said that the situation is not clear enough for him and Vettel is still in the game. He will not be given any preference for now. However, the team did not state anything about this matter for the future.
Mark Webber first signed with Minardi in 2002 and started as a full-time driver in the Formula 1. The 34 year old was able to make an impression in his very first season as he scored an impressive 5th place in a race with one of the underdog teams of that time. This was enough to draw team Jaguar’s attention towards the Australian which gave him a place in the team the following year. Webber was able to maintain his performance and he scored a total of 17 points to secure the 10th place in the drivers’ standings.
After staying with the team for another year, Mark joined Williams in 2004 and scored his first podium. He later joined Red Bull for the 2007 season. After struggling for 2 years with the team, Mark scored 2 wins, 8 podiums and 3 pole positions to shore up 69.5 points and also secure the 4th place in the drivers’ standings.
The Australian driver is currently no. 2nd after the race at Spa Francorchamps last week. He is optimistic as he has 179 points and is just 3 points behind Lewis who has 182 points. Webber has scored 4 wins, 7 podiums and 4 pole positions up until now in this season and hopes to regain his lead after the next race at Monza. The Red Bull team seems very confident and believes that one of their drivers will secure the drivers’ title for them. Red Bull, however, is just 1 point ahead of McLaren. “I think it's too early, but maybe there's a different strategy compared to McLaren. It's still too early at the moment but not far away, I would say”, said Webber.
Meanwhile, Vettel said in an interview, “There are still some races to go and we have seen how quickly things change. Monza will be hard for us. We should at least have been on the podium on Sunday, but everything is still in it. Head up, we move on.”
On the other hand, Horner is confident that Hamilton will not stay on the top of the standings for long. “Sometimes you ride your luck and he's had a bit of that this year”, the Red Bull boss said.
