Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz says team looking to extend ties with Renault – Formula 1 news
Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has stated that the team will look into a longer tie up with the engine supplier Renault beyond the 2011 Formula 1 season.
As the Formula 1 teams and manufacturers decided to go for V6 turbo engines for the 2014 season, Red Bull are looking into a Renault deal for 2014 season as well.
Although previously being interested in Mercedes engines as well, Dietrich stated that Red Bull are happy with the Renault engine which brought the first victory for the team in the 2010 season.
Currently the contract of Red Bull team with Renault will end at the end of the 2012 season but Dietrich stated that now the contract is expected to extend.
“An extension of our contract was close until the new situation came up. Concerning the V6 turbo from 2014 we have received positive signals from Renault, but we have to discuss the details of the new situation,” stated Dietrich.
Renault is currently supplying engine to three Formula 1 teams, Red Bull, Lotus Renault and Lotus GP. Out of these three teams the most successful has been the Red Bull team who secured the constructors’ and drivers’ championship in the 2010 season.
Along with that, Red Bull have also secured eight pole positions and 12 podium positions in the first eight races of the season, including six wins which came from Sebastian Vettel.
Although Red Bull were looking into their engine manufacturer company but Dietrich stated that this will be the last option on the mind.
“I would consider AVL capable of building a F1 engine, however only with a couple of re-enforcements in several areas. Only in extreme conditions with no manufacturer available for us,” commented Dietrich.
Nevertheless, everything Red Bull touch, turns to gold and it will be interesting to see how Renault and Red Bull partnership lives up in the coming years.
