Red Bull will stick with Renault engines for next year
Red Bull’s Technical Director Adrian Newey said he does not see his team using any other make for the car’s engine except Renault for the 2011 season.
Renault has been facing some engine problems in the recent past and the according to sources, the team had admitted that Red Bull’s engine power was much less if compared to Mercedes or Ferrari. There were some speculations regarding Red Bull switching to
Mercedes drive train as well. However, Newey cleared this matter as he told Germany’s Sport Bild that Red Bull will most likely stick with the Renault engines as it suites the teams package better.
“Where shall we go? McLaren has stopped us from getting the Mercedes engine. Therefore, there is only Ferrari. But we ask ourselves: if we beat them, will we still have the same specification as the Ferrari team?” he said.
Newey seemed very happy with the team’s current suppliers and acknowledged Renault as they always respond to his team’s requests and fulfil their requirements. However, Adrian had to admit that the French marquee “very strongly adhered” to the spirit of
the engine freeze and therefore had to fall behind in the power stakes.
“This means we now have a gap to Ferrari and Mercedes. And if Renault are not allowed to keep up, I can well imagine them withdrawing as an engine supplier,” added Newey.
The team is currently leading the constructors’ standings with 350 points, just 3 points clear of their rivals McLaren. The team has been performing superbly and they hope to secure both titles with the help of talented drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian
Vettel. Red Bull has been an example of versatility in the Formula 1 this season with reference to their drivers.
Mark Webber began his Formula 1 career 8 years ago and is now considered as an experienced driver in the sport. The Australian signed with Minardi to race as a full time driver in 2002 and scored 5th place in a race with the team that was quite
impressive as Minardi was one of the “underdog” teams back then. His performance impressed team Jaguar and earned him a spot in this team for 2003. Webber was able to score some good results with Jaguar as well as he scored a total of 17 points to secure the
10th place in the drivers’ standings.
Mark stayed with the team for another year before joining Williams for the 2005 Formula 1 season. The Australian managed to score his first podium with the team and scored 36 points to secure the 10th place in the drivers’ standings. The 33-year-old’s
journey with Williams lasted until 2006 after which he decided to join Red Bull in 2007. Mark struggled to perform with the team in the first two seasons. However, Red Bull improved massively in 2009 and helped the Australian secure his first win. Mark scored
2 wins, 8 podium positions and 3 pole positions to secure the 4th place in the drivers’ championship. Webber is currently leading the current drivers’ championship with 187 points, 5 points ahead of the former World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
However, his teammate Sebastian Vettel is one of the young guns in Formula 1 and has quite a different approach than Mark. The young German began his Formula 1 career in 2007, aiming nothing less than the championship. Like every driver, Sebastian had to
fight his way to the top as he was in Toro Rosso back then but managed to impress the teams heavily with his outstanding performances. He was offered a spot in Red Bull in 2009 which was one of the better teams after spending 2 years with Toro Rosso. Vettel
joined the team and proved his worth as he finished 2nd in the drivers’ standings with the help of 4 wins, 8 podiums and 4 pole positions. The 23-year-old is currently in 5th place with 163 points after scoring 2 wins, 6 podiums and an
impressive 7 pole positions.
Both drivers in the team are currently in pursuit for the title and hope to secure both the drivers and constructors’ titles for Red Bull Racing.
