Red Bull works on new exhaust for Mark Webber while Sebastian Vettel struggles – Formula 1 news
Red Bull will be working towards developing the exhaust system on Mark Webber’s car used at the Chinese Grand Prix.
It has been revealed that Sebastian Vettel does not feel comfortable with a different design, yet the team is going to work on the exhaust for Webber. Red Bull used both exhaust designs for the Shanghai circuit.
Red Bull have been looking to make few tweaks to their car as for the first time after two dominant seasons Red Bull are not leading the leader board.
“It was an interesting weekend, we collected a lot of data on different cars but ended up more or less in the same place [fourth and fifth], which was pretty funny. I think both packages have their advantages but for next week we will see what we do,” said
Vettel. “We know we have a couple of weaknesses, one was the speed on the straight and the other one was actually that the car is not yet working the way we want it to be.”
Vettel has been under tremendous pressure to perform and it has showed in his behaviour both on and off the track. During the Malaysian Grand Prix, Vettel got into a collision with Narain Karthikeyan which caused the German to lose out on a potential fourth
place finish. Vettel went on to finish 11th and pointless in the race.
After the race Vettel was very animated and said that “there are a few cucumbers on the road” referring to Karthikeyan’s driving.
It showed more of the frustration that Vettel has been going through so far in the season of not being able to have the same dominance as he showed in 2011.
Dr Helmut Marko of Red Bull explained more on why Webber has found the new exhaust design suitable to him and said that the Aussie is less sensitive to the car’s behaviour which not the case with Vettel.
It will be interesting to see how Red Bull and Vettel fare as the season progresses. Vettel’s seems agitated at not getting the results he would like to get, but this will be a good measure of his ability to cope with pressure situations. The season is still
very much open ended and Red Bull understands that very well.
