Red Bull’s Adrian Newey expects Mercedes, Ferrari to benefit from Blown Diffuser ban – F1 news
Red Bull Racing team’s technical director Adrian Newey has said that Mercedes and Ferrari will benefit the most from the ban on Blown Diffusers coming into effect from the upcoming Silverstone Grand Prix.
“I think probably that Ferrari and Mercedes will be less affected than we are, McLaren may also be less affected. We designed and develop the car around it the others fitted it basically for the first race,” he said.
McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh even stated that Red Bull will not have much advantage over its rivals after the ban on Blown Diffusers.
Red Bull Racing team’s officials on the other hand dismissed these claims and stated that nothing will change after this clampdown. However, Newey suspects that his team’s rivals will gain on them as they will lose some significant pace.
“We've got a regulation change, let's face it. How that is going to affect us compared to the others is difficult to tell. Lotus Renault, they're the ones who have clearly designed their car around the exhausts, so they I would imagine must be concerned,”
Newey told the media.
He added that almost all of the teams are using ‘cold blowing’ with the help of engine mapping as well.
Newey revealed that the team designed its car mainly around its exhaust system which is the main reason for Red Bull’s performance this season. The change in pace at the British Grand Prix is going to play a major role for the rest of the season as each
team’s performance after the upcoming race would become a bit more predictable.
Red Bull Racing are expected to lose around 5 tenths of a second from its qualifying performance which would bring them on level terms with Ferrari and McLaren if the current champions do not improve their performance without the Blown Diffuser.
