Red Bull’s Adrian Newey not pleased with allegations about front-wing: Formula One news
Red Bull’s technical chief Adrian Newey has admitted that the questions raised over his team’s front-wing have been annoying. He claimed that one of the rival teams have been trying to create an issue in order to create panic in the Red Bull garage.
The reigning champions have a more flexible wing, which is closer to the ground, compared to their rivals. However, the sport’s governing body - the FIA - has declared the design to be within this year's regulations.
Newey stated, “To be honest, it's a bit boring. I've had a season of people moaning about our front wing last year. The tests were made more rigorous by the FIA, it's examined in great detail. I mean, frankly, I think it's an effort by one team in particular to get a change in regulations.”
The British engineer further added, “We choose to run the car with quite a lot of rake; that means high at the rear, low at the front. Others, McLaren for instance, have chosen to take the opposite route. They run the car quite low-rake. Once you run the rear low, it means the front wing is automatically high.”
Newey’s criticism was probably directed towards McLaren, after drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button openly raised eyebrows over the design of the Red Bull. However, the only designer to win the constructor’s championships with three different teams, didn’t take any names while talking to the press.
McLaren have taken a big step closer to the Red Bull racing team after the first two races of the 2011 Formula One season. Hamilton was able to break the winning streak of the current champions, winning the Chinese Grand Prix after a thrilling end to the race.
Prior to that, Red Bull’s driver Sebastian Vettel won the opening two races in Australia and Malaysia and was in a very good position in China, until the last few laps of the race.
This has caused a few concerns for Newey and his team, but he vowed to bounce back in the upcoming races of the season. The team will be making some upgrades for the Turkish Grand Prix and will hope to get back to winning ways.
