Red Bull’s Christian Horner: FIA ban on Blown Diffuser is not even for every team – Formula 1
Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner has said that the ban on the Blown Diffuser by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is not even for every team which is a concern for the team.
Horner added that the engine suppliers have discussed some issues with the FIA and the Federation has allowed some tweaks to them for the remainder of the 2011 season.
Horner also stated that when the car is designed all the elements are kept in mind and the FIA’s ban on diffuser will impact the balance of the car. He added that Red Bull’s car was designed around the diffuser and its exit will hurt the team severely.
He said, “The most important thing is it's dealt with an even hand. It has the ability to have a significant effect. Elements of the car have been optimised around it and when regulations are changed that has a significant impact.”
The FIA is looking to change the off-throttle engine limitations for the Mercedes engine which uses a different technique to cool down the engine. On the other hand, Red Bull use the diffuser to produce downforce as well as to cool down the exhaust to ensure
reliability.
Horner stated that the FIA should not be biased towards any team. He said, “What is most important is there is equality of treatment across engine suppliers. The engine manufacturers have been negotiating with the FIA. It's down to the FIA to judge that.
This has only come about because of complaints from other teams.”
Horner added that Red Bull and Renault are in talks with the FIA to clarify the issue of blown diffuser before the qualifiers and the race on Sunday.
The blown diffuser was introduced by the Red Bull team and they were the ones to take full advantage of it in the first eight races of the ongoing 2011 season.
Red Bull have won six out of the first eight races of the season and taken all eight pole positions as well. They are currently at the top of the constructors’ table with 295 points.
