Red Bull’s Christian Horner: Mercedes-powered teams to dominate in Monaco GP – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner thinks that the Mercedes-powered teams will dominate in the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix.
Horner also added that his team’s performance will vary over the course of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Red Bull are leading both championship tables of the 2011 Formula 1 season but still Horner thinks that a complete outclass performance cannot be expected of his drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
Horner said, “I think the form will see-saw from circuit to circuit. At each type of circuit that we have been to, we've been able to be competitive. At some races we have been more competitive on a Saturday than a Sunday, but generally we've been there
and been able to cover what others have thrown at us.”
Red Bull have had some close contests in the beginning of the 2011 season from McLaren and recently from Ferrari. However, the defending champions have managed to see those two cars from their rear-view mirror.
Still Horner thinks that a strong challenge can be expected from Ferrari and McLaren.
Talking about the upcoming Monaco GP, Horner added that the Mercedes powered cars will have more edge than any other car.
He said, “In Montreal we think the Mercedes-powered teams will be very competitive, and I think it will see-saw from circuit to circuit,” hinting towards the McLaren team.
Moreover, Horner cited the 2010 scenario where Fernando Alonso of Ferrari came from behind and was leading Vettel going into the final race in Abu Dhabi.
In the Spanish Grand Prix, Vettel’s dominance was almost ended by McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton. However, Hamilton believed the sister concern of Red Bull played their part in proving that they really were owned by the beverage company by blocking his way
and letting the defending champion go ahead. Still Horner thinks that Vettel will not run away with the title and he will have to work hard for it.
The season continues in Monaco on May 29, 2011 and Red Bull have a clear 47-point lead over the McLaren team in the constructors’ table which will provide them some cushion over the British team.
