Red Bull’s Helmut Marko plays down chances that teams might go for a breakaway series – Formula 1
Red Bull’s motor racing consultant Helmut Marko has recently stated that the Formula 1 teams might not form a breakaway series as expected by Ferrari’s president Luca di Montezemolo.
Montezemolo has recently stated that Formula 1’s current owners, Citicorp Venture Capital are not going to have much control over the Formula 1 teams after the current Concorde Agreement expires in 2012 as a result of which, the teams can then form their
own series.
He added that finding a new owner for the sport is a possibility since Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is interesting in buying Formula 1.
Marko on the other hand believes that the current situation is not as serious as it sounds and the teams are going to look for a successful negotiation regarding the new agreement in the future.
“A suitable compromise can hopefully be found. Ferrari are the best-known team and have been in F1 the longest - but being Italian, they tend to express things more emotionally than others. In my opinion, the situation is nowhere near as bad as it looks,”
Marko told the media.
It is not as simple as it seems though as the teams recently held a meeting regarding this matter as well and according to the current situation, it seems that the teams are willing to become more active in this matter comparatively.
Luca told the media that there is a chance that Formula 1 form an association something similar to the National Basketball Federation.
“I think we have to be very pragmatic. At the end of 2012, the contracts of every single team with CVC will expire,” he said.
Other than that, Luca criticized the new rules and regulations introduced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) as he believes that these new rules have taken the action off the track and into the pits.
