Red Bull’s Mark Webber eying a win in Barcelona to complete his 2011 position trend – Formula 1
34-year-old Australian driver Mark Webber is confident that he will complete his position trend in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Webber finished fifth in the season opening Grand Prix on his home track in Australia. From thereon, he went on to take a fourth, third and most recently and second place finish in the Turkish Grand Prix. Now he targets a race win to complete his winning
sequence.
Webber stated, “I've now finished fifth, fourth, third and second in the four races of the year, so the trend is going in the right direction. We're off to Barcelona next, which is a track I like a lot. I just need to keep working.”
Webber has a good record in Barcelona when he won in 2010 and finished third in the 2009 season. The Aussie hopes that he will complete his winning run in the upcoming 2011 race.
However, Webber commented that in order to win a race he has to beat the toughest competitor of the 2011 season so far, his teammate Sebastian Vettel.
Aussie said, “He's at the top of his game at the moment and it's up to me to close the gap. To beat Seb in Spain, I'll have to do a better job than I did in Turkey. I'll need to be inch-perfect in qualifying and then have a cleaner first stint in the race.”
Webber added that strategy will be another tool by which he can beat Vettel in Spain.
The Australian’s performance graph in the 2011 season is consistently improving as he is becoming the only driver behind Vettel who can challenge the defending champion.
McLaren’s Jenson Button said that Webber should apply some pressure on Vettel to keep the championship door open for other drivers as well. Webber finished third in the Chinese Grand Prix and was only 3 seconds behind Vettel.
The next race of the 2011 season will be contested in Spain next week and Webber will try to win the race to challenge his teammate.
