Red Bull’s Mark Webber says he has full backing and support from his team – Formula 1 news
Red Bull driver Mark Webber says he feels confident of a good showing at the Indian Grand Prix as he has the support and backing of the entire team in his bid to secure second place in the drivers’ championship.
After his team-mate Sebastian Vettel claimed the title at Suzuka and Red Bull secured the constructors’ championship in Yeongam, team Principal Christian Horner said that the main priority for the Red Bull team is to make sure that Webber secures the second
place in the drivers’ championship.
“The entire team is behind me in support for the number 2 position,” Webber told
Mid-day.com in India. “With the constructor's title in the bag, and Seb having won the drivers' title, a Red Bull one-two in the drivers' championship will be a great achievement and a fantastic way to end the season.”
Webber is 13 points behind Jenson Button, who won the race at Suzuka, and looks to be in a good touch. It is going to be a difficult task, but given the dominance of the Red Bull car, and the help of the team, it can be achieved.
Vettel himself confirmed that he would be willing to let Webber win if the situation arises, for the better interest of the team.
The 35-year-old also said that next year Vettel will be under pressure and not him, as the German will actually be defending his title, and with the bar raised so high by him, it will be a challenge for him to achieve the same success next year.
Webber himself is very optimistic and determined to claim the second place position on overall standings for the 2011 championship battle.
Talking about his desire to achieve the feat he stated that he was not able to finish his 2010 Formula 1 season at the second position, but for this year, he would like to finish the title fight at the second place.
Webber will be looking to perform well at the Indian Grand Prix. The practice sessions on Friday will give a clearer picture of how the track will behave and how well Red Bull’s RB7 performs on it.
The first ever Indian Grand Prix begins on Sunday, October 30, 2011.
