Red Bull’s Mark Webber sets the pace in 1st Practice Session: Spanish Grand Prix – Formula One News
Red Bull’s Mark Webber led the times in first practice, a full second quicker over teammate Vettel, making it a Red Bull 1 – 2.
Mercedes' Nico Rosberg followed the two ahead of home boy Fernando Alonso. Michael Schumacher completed the most number of laps as he tries to get his season up to speed. Timo Glock, Jarno Trulli and both the Hispania Racing Team cars finished outside the
107% time.
Mark Webber was the only driver to post a time in the 1 minute 25 second region. His fastest lap was a blistering 1 minute 25.142 seconds after doing a total of 27 laps. His teammate, Sebastian Vettel, after going around the Catalunya circuit for 20 laps
straight, set the second fastest time which was 1 minute 26.149 seconds.
Sergio Perez proved to be the surprise package of the session as the Sauber went 5th fastest – Ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren. Hamilton looked to be a touch cautious as he was the only driver out of the top 10 to do fewer than 20 laps for the
session. The Briton was the last driver to set a time in the 1 minute 26 range; just shading it with a 1 minute 26.988 seconds.
Michael Schumacher, despite doing 3 laps more than his teammate, Nico Rosberg, who did 29, could only manage 7th fastest at the end. The German driver has been under quite some pressure since the start of this season, largely due to Rosberg’s
performance in the last 4 races.
Nick Heidfeld was classified 8th for the practice session with a 1 minute 27.132 seconds. The German driver was followed by the second McLaren. Jenson Button, like his teammate, had a lacklustre outing as he could only manage 9th fastest
– Nearly 2 seconds slower than Webber’s time.
Williams’ Rubens Barrichello rounded off the top 10. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was 16th fastest after doing 28 laps – Certainly under par on the day.
It’s going to be interesting how things pan out in the 2nd practice session on the same day.
