Red Bull’s Mark Webber wins the Brazilian Grand Prix to end 2011 season in style – Formula 1 news
Red Bull driver Mark Webber ended his drought with a fantastic win at the recently concluded Brazilian Grand Prix.
Webber after the qualifiers on Saturday had expressed his desire to record a win at Interlagos, and said that he would like to do everything to stop his teammate Sebastian Vettel from recording his 12th win of the season.
The Aussie was successful in his goal, although Vettel had a gearbox problem with his car throughout the race.
Jenson Button was another man gunning for the win, as his late charge toppled Fernando Alonso and though came close to pass Vettel in the closing stages of the race but Vettel showed his class and did not fold under the pressure of the Brit.
Alonso drove beautifully as he took over Lewis Hamilton – who retired because of a gearbox problem – and then passed Button with a great move around the outside of Ferradura. The medium tyres slowed his pace though later in the race and that is when Button
using the DRS zone passed the Spaniard.
Everyone was anticipating another Felipe Massa – Lewis Hamilton showdown at the final race of the season, but because of a gearbox failure, the Brit had to retire, and Massa drove with a lighter heart, although he drove solidly, but did not manage be as
fast as his teammate Alonso and finished fifth in the race.
Force Indian driver Adrian Sutil was the surprise package of the race, who finished sixth in the race with a wonderful display of skilful driving, and showed the growth of the team over the span of just two years in the sport. The Force India drivers have
helped the team secure sixth place standing in the constructors’ championship, which is one better than last year, and a great achievement overall.
Nico Rosberg was expected to do much better than he finished as he really impressed in the qualifiers, but he was only able to finish seventh followed by Paul di Resta, Kamui Kobayashi and Vitaly Petrov.
Michael Schumacher and Bruno Senna were expected to much better than they finished. Both drivers battling it out to claim the ninth place finish, but in the heat of the battle, Schumacher turned across Senna which caused the Renault to lock its tyres, both
the cars came into contact damaging Senna’s front wing and punctured the left rear of the Mercedes. Senna received a drive-through penalty for the incident. Schumacher finished the race placed at 15th and Senna at 17th.
It was a fantastic end to the season, with the final race churning out some unpredictable results, which is always good for the sport and gives good perspective to the coming season.
