Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel retains team position on day two of Barcelona testing – Formula 1 news
The five-day Formula 1 Barcelona test session, that started on Tuesday 8 March, 2011, has entered its second day.
The first day of session proved good for eight F1 teams under unexpected weather conditions. On day two of testing, Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel retained his team position and posted a time of 1 minute 21.865 seconds on the time-sheets.
The remaining three teams, including Ferrari, Mercedes GP and Williams participated on day two of session. However, Hispania Racing Team again missed the second day of testing as its new F111 car debut was delayed to Friday.
Vettel was followed closely by Sebastien Buemi of Toro Rosso, who clocked 1 minute and 22.396 seconds in his new STR6 car. On day one, his outing was cut short due to some mechanical issues in his car, but after some engineering work, he completed his best
run.
In third position was Vitaly Petrov of Renault, with a time of 1 minute and 22.670 seconds. Petrov used the new features of R31 car during the session, also testing on both hard and soft compounds of Pirelli tyres.
He was pleased ahead of the good working of his car and said, “We spent the morning doing shorter runs and working on the set-up, and I was pretty happy with the car by the end of the morning. But the most important thing was to complete the race distance,
which we managed this afternoon. It’s the first time I’ve been able to do consistent long runs and really start understanding the tyres.”
Both Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes and Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber failed to deliver their best drive over the session and came fourth and seventh respectively.
Felipe Massa put Ferrari fifth and completed 101 laps in his new 150° Italia car. Paul di Resta finished in sixth slot with his VJM04 car ahead of Nico Rosberg of Mercedes GP.
Jarno Trulli of Team Lotus completed 98 laps, coming ninth on the list of fastest laps, clocking 1 minute and 26.090 seconds.
Trulli said, “They're behaving pretty much how we expected them to and the changes we made to the car gave us the results we wanted so we'll look through all the information we've gathered and see if we can take another step forward tomorrow.”
Pastor Maldonado of Williams made a disappointing run over the session and registered a time of 1 minute and 26.989 seconds on the time-sheets. Jerome d’Ambrosio again put Virgin as the final runner of the day.
