Red Cadeaux set to take on the marathon distance at the Curragh in the Irish St. Leger
Coming off a disappointing 5th place finish in the Group 2 Darley Prix Kergorlay at Deauville, Red Cadeaux, believed to be hindered by a ground labeled good over a distance of 1 mile and 7 furlongs under jockey John McLaughlin on 21 August, 2011.
The 5-year-old chestnut gelding will look to redeem himself in the Group 1 Irish Field St. Leger at the Curragh on 20 September, 201, over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs.
The son of Cadeaux Genereux, out of Artisia by Peintre Celebre, Red Cadeaux earlier this year competed against six other runners in the similar distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs in the Group 3 At the Races at the Curragh on 25 June, 2011.
Under usual ride Tom McLaughlin, Red Cadeaux jumped into 4th in the beginning and chased leaders but found the gaps well to win the race.
The Ed Dunlop trained gelding was a highly considered to take part in the European richest handicap, the Ebor Handicap, but his connections took a detour to Deauville to run him in France against 13 other runners.
Red Cadeaux finished four lengths behind the Deauville winner. Red Cadeaux was sent at the odds of 20 to 1 to win the race and under jockey Tom McLaughlin the pair settled in fourth position on the rail early in the race.
With speed increasing by the minute, Red Cadeaux couldn’t keep up the pace and got relegated to seventh place with 4 furlongs remaining in the marathon of a distance.
Edged past to be in sixth on the inside and fought for his place and staying on with 2 ½ furlongs remaining. Kept their place inside the rail, the pair decided to go all out, starting off with immediate leader with just 2 furlongs to go.
It was a hard ridden race for Red Cadeaux and with 1 ½ furlong to go, the gelding didn’t quicken inside the final furlong but kept the fifth position 150 yards out and stayed on.
He is best priced at 40 to 1 at the Curragh.
