Red Devils Five Biggest Wins Over The Reds in The English Premier League - Part 2
Premier League Season 2002-2003: Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United
In the 2002-03 season the ‘Red Devils’ forced their second double win over ‘The Reds’ in the Premier League.
This started with Manchester United’s trip to Anfield in which they came out victorious with a score of two to nil. It had been six seasons since the ‘Red Devils’ defeated ‘The Reds’ and this win came out of the efforts of Diego Forlan.
Jerzy Dudek, Liverpool’s goalkeeper of the time became one of the most hated figures in Liverpool’s player history as he turned Diego Forlan a ‘cult hero’ through Manchester United’s fan base.
After two rather dreadful efforts made by the Uruguayan striker, Forlan landed a double at Liverpool’s home ground.
At this point Jerzy Dudeks’s time with Liverpool appeared to be very limited and Sami Hyypia did manage to score a goal against Manchester United but it turned out to be very unproductive.
‘The Reds’ were again denied a spot in the Champions League and this was argued to be caused by their loss at their own home ground against Manchester United.
Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool: FA Cup Final 1996
Liverpool and Manchester United have only met in four cup finals and Manchester United has come out victorious in both the FA Cups that the two teams have had the chance to compete for. Whereas Liverpool has won both the League Cup finals that the two rivals
battled for.
The 1996 FA Cup final that the two mavericks battled for was won by the ‘Red Devils’ and Liverpool had not lifted the FA Cup since 1992. Then the two teams met again in 1994 for the cup match with just to see Manchester United leave with the trophy again.
This game was a very tight match and the deciding move only came in the later part of the game when Eric Cantana the Frenchman from Manchester United scored to give the win.
What made things worst was that Eric Cantana had only recently returned to play after a period of nine months as he was banned for this period because of an incident that involved him attacking a Crystal Palace fan.
In spite of Cantana’s long leave from professional football and that level of play, the Frenchman took his chance and managed to take another honour away from one of their biggest rivals, ‘The Reds.’
To this day the matches between Liverpool and Manchester United are very heated meetings with Liverpool playing their very best. The sad part for ‘The Red’ fans is that more often than not Manchester United does come out at the better end.
Take for example the last League match Liverpool and Manchester United played at Old Trafford.
Manchester United scored in the first half and then scored another soon after the whistle of the second half blew. Things seemed gloomy for Liverpool fans but still ‘The Reds’ showed their true form and came back from a score of two to nil to level the score
to an even two to two.
At a point it seemed as though Liverpool could actually beat their rivals at their home ground but Dimitar Berbatov scored the third goal for Manchester United and gave Manchester United their win.
Anyone who was watching the match could notice the obvious tension on the field and the bitterness among the players; numerous yellow cards were handed out in the match.
Torres was constantly disallowed to take a shot at the goal while some may call the ‘Red Devils’ methods of stopping the Liverpool striker as dirty play, it definitely did not go unnoticed by the referees.
Both goals scored by Liverpool came from Steven Gerrad and both were a product of some foul play when the defenders tried to stop Fernando Torres.
Still Manchester United came out victorious and this game came finished with Dimitar Berbatov scoring a hat-trick and this is the first hat-trick for a Manchester United player against Liverpool since 1946.
