So I was in the Boston/NH area visiting a friends; his house is in the middle of lots and lots of trees; In the morning this little red head bird start smashing himself against the window over and over. The 6 days I was there he came everymorning to do the same thing at the same time. Does anybody knows what kind of bird is this and why they like to do that? Jus out of curiosity.

Thanks.

  1. The behavior you describe is not all that uncommon.  The bird is probably a male and is seeing it's own reflection in the glass, thinks it is another bird and is defending it's territory.  It probably only happens in the morning because the sun is at the right angle at that time to make the reflection in the window.

It would be hard to speculate on what species of bird without more information about the size, shape of the beak and other markings.

  2. Birds see outside reflections in the windows, so they feel it natural to fly into it.   You could put a photo or statue of an owl to scare them off, stickers on windows.
