Red Legend Stakes 2011 - J P’s Gusto wins, Richest three year old in USA, Jockey J. D. Acosta
The three year old sprint, J P’s Gusto, owned by GEM Inc, is back with a bang after winning the Red Legend Stakes at Charles Town Races on 18 June.
It wasn’t much of a challenge for the West Coast based J P’s Gusto and he easily dominated the race and eventually wrapped it up. Also, while doing so became the richest three-year old in the country.
J P’s Gusto earned a purse of $400,000. After a few second place finishes in the longer tracks part of longer events, the decision was made to get him back to run on shorter tracks where he performs at his best and that’s where he has been successful by
winning multiple stakes.
The real goal for trainer, Michael Hushion, is to prepare the three-year old for Grade One King’s Bishop Stakes. It’s a 7 furlong race and the distance will be perfect for J P’s Gusto short burst runs that is sometimes impossible to track down because he
bolts and generates incredible speed towards the finishing line right from the outset.
J P’s Gusto started strong and increased his lead all the way to the finish line at the Red Legend Stakes on June 18, 2011. He tracked down the race leader Der Meister and easily got passed him.  Gusto unleashed unreal speed to claim the Red Legend Stakes.
The son of Successful Appeal crossed the finish line in an unofficial time of 1 minute and 25.03 seconds. There was no duelling for the first places instead it got interesting when a battle for second place took place between Nacho Saint, and, Loranger Native.
Loranger Native, and, Nacho Saint were left to grind it out for the second place as the first place was not a possibility. Both fought valiantly till the end but Loranger had better speed and got a better position than Nacho Saint, who finished second. Der
Meister never looked in contention for anything after the brief early lead.
Jockey, J. D. Acosta, who was riding J P’s Gusto for the first time, only knew about the horse’s blistering speed, and, when the three-year old sprint took on the leader Der Meister, the jockey said that he never looked back because he knew the speed was
too much for anyone on the track.
The unreal pace that J P’s Gusto has and can unleash especially on shorter tracks gives him the edge over the entrants in Kings Bishop Stakes at Saratoga.
