Question:

Red Light Camera with No Flash in California?

If I went through a red light camera in California (close call) and did not see a flash, could I still get a ticket? I was just barely past the second crosswalk line (towards the inside of the intersection) when I saw the light turn red (by maybe 5 feet).

What are my chances?

  1. I blatantly ran a red light the other night. I knew it was red, I just didn't feel like waiting. In my town (in Cali) I haven't ever seen a flash. Anyway, I was pulled over because a cop saw me, but he actually let me off with a warning.

So really, you are fine. People do that all the time, trying to go faster when the light is yellow, and then catching a red halfway through. No big deal.

  2. You don't always see the flash. No such thing as a 'close call'. If you set off the camera, you'll be getting a ticket in the mail. No way to beat it. Chances are you maybe out of $275+.

  3. How is running a red light defined in CA. Often, it's entering an intersection AFTER the light is red. Year ago in Texas, it used to be that you were in the intersection when the light was red, but too many legislators were getting ticketed and changed it.
