Red Sox’ Cameron done for season
The Red Sox continue to undergo setbacks this season as outfielder Mike Cameron will miss the rest of the season with an abdominal tear. He will have to undergo surgery to repair the torn muscle. Cameron was placed on the disabled list on August 2nd and had been undergoing treatment in hopes of returning to action. His body has not responded as well as he wanted to the treatment. On top of the tear he is dealing with a hip flexor and a strained groin.
“We're in a position now where we need all of the healthy – physically and mentally – guys possible playing in the field," he said. "Me trying to play 65 percent is probably not beneficial to the ballclub at the moment.”
Cameron has only played in 48 of the Red Sox 120 games and has been battling injuries all season. First he passed a kidney stone on April 15th in Minnesota, before discovering the abdominal tear a couple of days later. He was originally placed on the DL on April 20th and missed 34 games. He came back on May 25th but he never felt he was at 100%. He never played more than five games in a row. After playing eight games in 10 days towards the end of July, he landed on the DL again.
"We're coming to the part of season now where it's important to have the healthiest guys on the baseball field. I'm looking at that aspect. Sometimes, as hard as it's been to give in to certain things, it's probably best to start looking at other options now."
Cameron said that he has been in a lot of pain throughout this ordeal and surgery is the best option. He expects to be back in time for spring training next year and said how hard it was to leave a team that has been so resilient all season.
"Probably the worst thing for me is to have the [pain] threshold I have," he said. "But man, we worked so hard just to be at this point as a team. I always look at it from a team aspect, even though everybody is saying, don't look at it from the team aspect, look at it from the individual aspect. But now, from the aspect of looking at the baseball club, I don't feel like it would be as helpful to the team to try to be a hero.”
It’s remarkable how Boston has been so resilient in battling injuries. It’s a miracle that they’re still in playoff contention at this point. Their season will likely come down to the wire and even then, this season has been special in its own way.
