There is a Red Tailed Hawk that has been killing my ducks! We have Pekin Ducks and Mallard Ducks and he's gotten several of them. I don't want anymore harm to my ducks.. Is there anyway I can scare the bird away?

Someone said that the hawk won't leave till there are a few or no more ducks left and I'm very worried!

  1. construct a safe pen with a mesh or solid roof.

he wont leave as long as theres an easy meal there

and theres nothing you can do to deter him as hes a protected specieis in the united states!

  2. If you keep ducks, you should have them in a wildlife proof coop or pen.  How exactly did the hawk get to them if you are keeping them in a secure place?   As long as you are offering a free meal, the hawk will keep coming back.  Other predators may attack and eat your ducks as well if they are not kept in a safe enclosure.  Keep in mind, hawks are protected by law and cannot be harmed or harassed in any way.

  3. the Redtail probly has found out how easy the ducks are to get and the food chane seas that its the top of it or the other game has been gone or too light for it too feed its young witch ar just getting to know how to hunt you can call the game warden and they should provide you with a number to call to see what you can do

  4. As long as you have ducks or any other small animals walking around the property the hawks are always going to be there. You can pen the ducks but it won't get rid of the hawks. The best you can do right now is try to contact your local falconers association. Each state besides Connecticut, hawaii and DC allow falconers to trap birds of prey to use for hunting. As a fellow falconer the season starts Sept 1st. If you can do some research and find the local club in your state contact them and let them know you have a hunting hawk on your property. You may just get a few falconers rushing over there to get to him first. For your situation it's a win win situation for both you and the hawk. And the falconers who are well trained know what to do without hurting your ducks or the hawk. Good Luck

  5. It's doing what a hawk does. You provided it with food and it came for food. If you still want to avoid it, there are a few things you can do--none of them fool-proof, but I hope that one of them will work.

    1) You can go to wal-mart, target, home depot, or anywhere like that and purchase a fake owl. These owls are meant for scaring off birds like grackles, pigeons, and mice, but they might work with hawks. The only problem is is that the owl will also scare off your birds, and rabbits. The owl will just be fastened to your roof or something like that.

    2) You can hire a falconer to come and trap the bird; falconers are always interested in birds like red-tails, ferruginous, and other hawks because they are great hunters. However, the falconer might not be interested because they already have enough birds, and they might come to take a look at the bird, but decide that they aren't interested.

    3) You can just keep doing what you are; avoiding the feeder. Eventually it will turn to the woods or another area for food.

    4) Live with it. It should be migrating south come September, October, or November, if where you live gets cold.

    Best of luck,

    Phoenix

P.S. Just make sure that you don't harm it. That is illegal and punishable by up to 6 months in federal prison, 500$ fine, or more, if it indeed a raptor, or an endangered species.
