Red Trump storms to victory in The Black Country's Only Racecourse Maiden Stakes at Wolverhampton
Red Trump cruised to victory in The Black Country's Only Racecourse Maiden Stakes, held at Wolverhampton on Monday, February 20, 2012. The three-year-old put in an all out effort to beat Prime Run, who troubled him right through the event.
The 7-fourlong show began at 17:30. Among the contestants were Red Trump, Prime Run, Charlcot, Burning Passion, Henry George and Fantasy Hero.
Charles Hills’s novice demonstrated a steady pace all the way through.
In the later part of meeting, he came up with a powerful act, taking a handsome lead inside the final furlong.
Ridden by William Carson, the champion displayed a flawless run, giving his rivals no chance to make an impact.
Despite all the hard work, it was not a comfortable win for Red Trump, as Prime Run kept on creating problems for him.
Both contenders ran neck to neck throughout the race, but Red Trump eventually sealed the top slot by head’s margin.
Prime Run remained unlucky, narrowly missing the first position. However, his second place would have been quite shocking for the bookmakers.
David Simcock’s trainee was given the odds of 100-30, one of the lowest in the competition. Yet, the newly turned three-year-old impressed everyone by doing a great job.
This fantastic performance would prompt the bookies to rate him relatively higher in the next meetings.
In the final furlong, Prime Run had every chance to take the victory but the luck didn’t favour him when it mattered most.
The third position belonged to Charlcot who was sent off with a starting price of 8-1.
The James Bethell-trained led the proceedings early but gave away his advantage after that.
The four-year-old’s connections were expecting him to bounce back later in the race but he stayed on the same pace, falling 1 ¾ lengths adrift of Prime Run.
Burning Passion ended up fourth whereas Henry George and Fantasy Hero respectively completed the list of six.
After a couple of rough rides earlier in his career, Red Trump has finally recorded his maiden triumph. His connections are now expecting him to continue his winning journey and register more wins this season.
