Would drinking red wine be healthy for people who have not drinken alcohol in their life?

For instance, I plan on making a dish that requires red wine. It requires about 1 cup, but the dish serves about 5 people.

I plan on making this dish about once a week.

Would it also be healthy for kids?

  1. healthy (and delish!!)

  2. Once you heat the wine, all the alcohol evaporates and all you're left with is the (delicious) flavour. Red wine is great for health, as long as you consume it in moderation (one or two glasses a day). Here are some of its health benefits --

*Resveratrol is a chemical similar to the human hormone estrogen which is found in abundance in Red Wine. It protects grapes against fungal infections. In humans, however, it has even more valuable effects. It functions as an powerful antioxidant and anticoagulant (blood thinner). Additionally, it also has anti-inflammatory and is considered to inhibit certain cancers.

*Some researchers have previously suggested that it would be beneficial to supplement people's diets with resveratrol because of its anticarcinogenic and anti-arteriosclerotic properties. It has also been suggested as treatment for breast cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

*The antibacterial properties of wine have been known since ancient times. Both red and white wines have been used to treat wounds, cuts and abrasions, though red wine has been seen to be more effective. Researchers have found that red and white wines are also effective in inhibiting the growth of several strains of streptococci bacteria that are involved in tooth decay, and some cases of sore throat. These anti-bacterial qualities are because of the acids that wine contains. In fact Professor Gabriella Gazzani and colleagues at the University of Pavia in Italy have researched this issue and have come to the conclusion that wine could actually make a good antibacterial mouth wash to fight tooth decay and a sore throat. They have stated in an article in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that wine can be used to combat harmful oral bacteria.

*Red Wine also contains Melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep and lowers anxiety. Newsweek called this compound “the all-natural nightcap”, as it helps set the body clock or circadian rhythm. Research suggests it could do everything from slowing the aging process, to protecting the immune system. So, a glass of red wine may be the best way to unwind or relax – just in case you needed science to tell you so!

  3. Pretty well everything that involves the fermentation process is healthy. Well technically the  burning of  Lactic  acid is  healthy  so  yes that is why it is  good  for you. Lactic acid burns when the fermentation process that makes the wine good and healthy.. As for  kids  give them  water with vinegar  in it, So they can burn the fermentation If you burn it off by using energy. it is good.

  4. Red wine in moderation is good for you. As a matter of fact you can drink a glass of wine every day and it will help you instead of hurt you. Cooking meals with wine will not affect your children unless you over do it. Everything in moderation is not bad.

  5. Almost all of the alcohol cooks out, so there is no need to be concerned about using it in recipes for children or people who don't drink. As long as it is a cooked dish.

If people don't drink because they are alcoholics, they often prefer to avoid all alcohol used in cooking.  The flavor of the original beverage can be a trigger for them to relapse.

In answer to the other part of your question, multiple studies show that drinking red wine is healthy in moderate amounts

  6. This is an excellent question, and one that has taken some research. The use of alcohol in cooking will not affect you if the food to which the alcohol has been added is fully heated following the addition of the alcohol. With heat the alcohol oxides and only the flavoring remains. However alcohol that is added after cooking will remain intact and could affect you.

  7. Fantastic question.  Besides the modern science of Resveratrol and the benefits that red wine has.  Maimonides the great 15th century scholar and doctor wrote that wine is best used as an aid before and slightly during dinner as it aids in digestion.  Drinking it after food, he says doesn't carry that benefit.

Modern science sometimes neglects the proper manner in which certain fare should be consumed, instead focusing on the "active" ingredients.

If you've never drunk alcohol before why start?  If you feel good and don't feel a desire for it, your body is probably telling you that you don't need it.  Listen to your body before any "new" science that changes as much as the news.

Regarding making it in a dish, my assumption would be that it wouldn't be in the concentrations to be of much benefit though it may make the dish taste better as a marinade.
