Most people try to pair wine with food.  I don't. I never drank white wine until last year. I still drink whatever I am in the mood for except for broiled fish(white) and any meal with Italian tomato sauce(red).

Favorite red:  just about any Tuscan red.

Favorite white:  New York State dry riesling

There are no rules apart that red really doesn't  go with fish and that's about it (and even that's my opinion as red with tuna, marlin, swordfish might work !).

I'm a white lover and have my own matches for even red meats .... you go with what works for you, but if you're hosting a dinner party its best to go with perceived "matches".

Just go for a quality wine, red or white, experiment and find your favourites, and you'll be well happy !

Both, white as an aperitif and with the starter, red with the main course.
