Red Wings edge past Canucks 5-4 in overtime
Henrik Zetterberg scored his second goal of the night in overtime, to give the Detroit Red Wings a hard fought 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks at the Joe Louis Arena.
The Red Wings started off the first period in confident fashion. They came up with some quick, pin-point passing at the start which didn't allow the away side to settle into the game.
Detroit took the lead in the ninth minute through a well placed shot from Danny Cleary. The rest of the period saw both teams create a number of chances, but they failed to score. The Red Wings led 1-0 at the end of the first period, with the home team making
14 goal attempts compared to Vancouver's 17.
The Vancouver Canucks started the second period strongly and showed a lot of attacking intent. They leveled the scores in the second minute. The goal was scored by Henrik Sedin from a decent strike. However Detroit was in no mood to hold back and defend,
and they switched to a more attacking game plan.
Detroit restored their lead in the seventh minute through Valtteri Filppula. However the Vancouver Canucks piled up attack after attack, and leveled the scores once again through Daniel Sedin.
The final minute of the period saw the away team cap an impressive performance in the second period, to take the lead for the first time in the game. Mikael Samuelsson scored the Canucks third goal to put them 3-2 up. The away side had 13 goal attempts,
while the Detroit Red Wings had 11 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of the period saw Detroit scoring in the second minute to tie the game. The goal was scored by Henrik Zetterberg from an absolutely brilliant backhand shot. However, Vancouver Canucks took the lead once again through Jeff Tambellini’s
goal. Detroit then scored in the 17th minute through Nicklas Lidstrom to level the scores, and send the match into overtime.
The period and regulation time ended with the scores level on 4-4, with the Canucks making eight goal attempts to the Detroit Red Wings 19. In overtime Henrik Zetterberg scored in the third minute, to win the game for the Detroit Red Wings 5-4.
