I have been watching the Wings for a lot of years, and am embarrassed to admit I dont know this, but here goes. Have the Wings ever lost a best of 7 series after winning the first two games?

  1. Yes, in the 1942 Finals they were up 3-0 over Toronto, who came back to win.

In 1999, they were up 2-0 over Colorado, then lost four straight. In 2002, they were down 0-2 to Vancouver and won the next four.

  2. The Wings also blew a 2-0 series lead in the 2001 quarterfinals against the L.A. Kings.  Just like the Colorado series in 1999, the Wings lost four straight after winning the first two.

  3. That happened to them in 1966. They won the first two games of the finals at the Montreal Forum, and then lost four straight to the Canadiens.

It was a tough pill to swallow for Wings' fans. They sensed that their team had it made after winning the first two on the road.

To top it off, the cup-winning overtime goal for Montreal in game 6 was an odd one. Henri Richard of the Canadiens slid into the Detroit net, and when he got up, the puck was underneath him. The  goal stood, and the Montreal Canadiens skated around the old Olympia Stadium rink with the cup in front of thousands of stunned and disappointed fans. I was one of them.
