Being an Avalanche fan, I never understod the octopus and red wings deal. What is the story behind that? why do they do it?

    it has been a tradition ever since some dude brought an octopus in the 50's and threw it on the ice. The eight legs on the octopus were supposed to symbolize the 8 wins it took to win the cup back then. The Wings went on to win the cup that year.
