Question:

Red Wings upcoming signings?

With Hossa signed for a year, it's almost guaranteed that the Wings give Zetterberg and Franzen long term deals. If Hossa works out do they have to let Filppula go? Also, any guesses as to who will be the next starting goalie after Osgood when he retires? Ryan Miller?

  1. hopefully Miller. but more than likely Howard. long shot Conklin.

  2. Osgood has 3 years left on his contract... and at that point, the WINGS will have either Howard, Larssen or McCollum to take over. Notice we took a goalie in the draft? I do not think the Wings want to go out and spend 7mil on a goalie! What they need, with the defense they have, is a solid guy who can step up and make the saves when he has to.  They dont need a 7mil dollar goalie with the system they play. The Wings are spending about 2.5mil for both goalies on their roster right now, good goalies.... that allows us to have guys like Hossa on the team. The Wings and Osgood will train their next goalie so that his salary isnt some outrageous cap hit.

Hossa? If he works out, he WILL be a WING next season. Holland will make sure of that..... Holland is the only GM I know that could pull it off.

  3. I'd be perfectly fine if they let Filppy, Sammy, or Hudler go.  As much production as Sammy and Huds gave us, they still are so soft its hard to watch.  If V-Flip didn't miss the open net so much, I'd like him, buut he does.

I also think going after Miller would be a bad idea.  It isn't necessary, give Z & Franzen long-term contracts with the money saved from Miller.

  4. Our first round draft pick this season is an American goalie out of Guelph named Thomas McCollum.  Depending on how he does in Grand Rapids, I would assume he will be their starter.  Unless they're keeping him for a trade at some other point, teams usually take goalies in the first round with the intention of keeping him around.

Filppula is going to sign sometime before his arbitration hearing in late July or early August.  I honestly can't guess the extent of his contract, because even with the yearly increase in cap space, Henrik Zetterberg in my opinion is going to be signed for another 5-7 seasons after 08-09 for no more and no less than $6.7 mil a season (Pav signed a 7 year deal worth $47 mil before last season).  Most of the other expensive guys are locked up for at least another 2 seasons, so I think we will sign Filppula for longer than 2 seasons.  I think Hossa will work out simply becase he would have to strive to not be able to play with the Red Wings European talent.  It really depends, he could leave for a huge contract but winning the cup tends to persuade guys to stay.  It's a coin flip.

Then again, Ryan Miller is a possibility I could definitely be good with.  As goofy as he looks, the boy's from Michigan.  I'm always for the hometown talent coming back to Hockeytown.  He is pretty d**n good too.  There are still other goaltenders I'd rather have.
