Red and Black Striped Ant-like Bug?

Question

I found this red and black striped bug in my backyard and it looks like a giant ant. It is about an inch long and similar to the red velvet ant but it has no fur. Can anyone tell me what this is?

I'm not sure of the name of it, but I think its pretty much the same as the red velvet.   be careful with it....it has a really long stinger on the rear end, much like a wasp.   if you can take a piece of cardboard and use it to hold the thing down, you can watch it sting the cardboard....the stinger is really long.

This part of the world calls it a Cow Ant.  I can't say for sure what the correct name of it is.
