Red eared turtle tank set up?

Hi. I have 3 small red eared slider tutles and I have a small 10 gallon tank and a larger tank (perhaps 25 gal?).

I want to make a really nice set up and was wondering how deep I can make the water. I know there needs to be sunning areas for the turtles and I do have that, but I would like to have aquarium fish in the tank as well with a filter. Can the water be a foot deep?

  1. here is a thought get some bigger tanks and put this in the reptile section

  2. The turtles will eat the fish so forget that.  My son had 3 red eared sliders for years and they were as big as dinner plates and living in a pond when he finally couldn't keep them anymore and had to find someone with a bigger pond for them.

They are very very messy and vicious.  As they grow they have enough strength in their jaws to sever a small finger.  Sliders will spend most of their time in the water but you still need an area for them to get out with a sun lamp for them to dry their shell.  As they get larger you'll have to provide them with live food such as mice.

Think hard about whether you are ready to make the commitment that it takes to look after these turtles.  They require a lot of maintenance and it isn't easy to get rid of them later.  Also remember they are carriers of salmonella so you want to be careful when handling them or doing tank maintenance.
