Red hot Boston Red Sox annihilate Cleveland Indians 14-1 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox annihilated the Cleveland Indians 14-1 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, August 12 in the finale of their four match series.
After losing two out of the first three games, the Red Sox were looking to end the series on an aggressive note and that is exactly what they did on Sunday to split the four game series. Boston’s offence, in particular, looked in destructive form and it
laid the foundation of an impressive win.
"A laugher and we needed it," manager Bobby Valentine said with a smile on his face. "The guys had a good time."
"It was catch-up baseball from the get-go," Indians’ manager Manny Acta said. "It's not fun at all when you come to the plate and you're down by five runs."
Dustin Pedroia doubled to deep right in the first inning to put his side on the board. Adrian Gonzalez joined the party with a two run home-run to right, stretching the lead to 3-1.
Carl Crawford, Kelly Shoppach, Cody Ross and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia all made valuable contributions as the Red Sox raced to an impassable 8-1 lead.
With momentum on their side, the Red Sox continued to put pressure on Cleveland’s rotation, scoring eight runs in the fifth to establish complete control over the contest. For the Indians, Carlos Santana scored the only run with a sacrifice fly hit to centre
in the first.
Jon Lester bounced back strongly after taking a humiliating loss on his previous start. Boston’ starting pitcher gave up just a run in six solid innings while striking-out a season high 12 batters.
"It's nice to win," said Lester in a post game interview. "My confidence never strayed. I knew my stuff was there. I had to keep telling myself that.”
"Scoring all those runs helps," he added. "It takes pressure off me to try and be perfect."
Relief pitchers Junichi Tazawa, Clayton Mortensen and Alfredo Aceves combined to pitch three scoreless innings to help their side stay in the playoffs race. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can take this momentum into their next series.
