Red-hot Mark Selby breaks the Crucible record – 2011 World Snooker Championship
The Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, has broken all Crucible records, as he becomes the first man ever to produce six century breaks in a single World Championship match.
The World Number 3, Selby, has also ended his second session with a commanding 12-4 lead over the seven-time World Champion, Stephen Hendry, in the second round of the 2011 World Snooker Championship, which is being held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England.
The overall score was 125 (125)-5; 5-114 (114); 108 (108)-7; 98 (98)-1; 70-45; 135 (129)-0; 112 (51)-6; 68-31; 100 (100)-21; 27-66 (62); 128 (127)-5; 104 (87)-19; 37-75 (75); 5-74 (74); 119 and (117)-0.
The Englishman started the opening session in a straight forward fashion, as he fired up a mind-boggling century break of 125 in the first frame. The King of Crucible, Hendry, however responded with a dashing century break of 114 in the second frame to level things.
It looked as if there was going be a tough battle before the twenty-seven-year-old Selby completely turned the tables on his opponents. He won all the following seven frames in a row. In the meanwhile, he showcased magnificent century breaks of 108 and 129.
In the second session Selby continued his impressive run, as he again dominated the first frame by carving century breaks. Later on Selby again mopped up a marvellous century break of 127 which was followed by another 117 in the fifteenth frame.
The record could have been extended further to eight century breaks but unfortunately he went out of the position after compiling breaks of 98 and 87 in the fourth and twelfth frame respectively.
For the Scottish legend, Stephen Hendry, it was a nightmare, as he left Selby needing four snookers in the last frame before he lost it to trail 12-4 at the end of the session.
Both players will start off with their third and final session today. The winner will face Ding Junhui or Stuart Bingham in the quarter-final on April 26 at the Crucible Theater.
