Red light on XBOX 360?

My son has just put his XBOX on this morning, and instead of a green light circling the power button, it is red. Any idea what this means?

this means is most probly has a hardware problem ring microsoft they will fix it for free

There are 4 possible red light patterns.  You need to know which light(s) is/are lit up to determine what the problem is.

If it's 4 red lights, it probably just means that the AV cable is loose, so just plug it in tighter.

If it's 3 red lights (looks like my avatar), then it's the ring of death.  It's a hardware failure, and the best way to get it fix is to call MS (1.800.4MY.XBOX).

If it's 2 red lights, it's an overheating issue, so you'll need to let the 360 cool down before attempting to try to play it.

If it's just 1 red light, it's a hardware failure.  It could be the hard drive, DVD disk drive, AV, etc.  You'll need to find the secondary error to get better details.

this is very common you will need to get microsoft to fix this and the amount of red lights that are showing will tell you whats wrong with it.

1 red light- hard ware failure

2 red lights- overheated

3 red lights- RROD (red ring of death) the console is broken

4- AV cable is loose

so phone microsoft and tell them how many red lights there are and they will fix it free of charge

you got the red ring of death. your xbox doesn't work anymore and you have to send it in to microsoft and they will fix it for free.

argh they call that the ring of death, im not sure what it actually means but loadsa people had this problem u gotta take it bak to the shop and they will proberly replace it

this happened to my xbox, take the cords out and put them all back in, mine worked, but maybe you do have the ring of death?

its broke if u send it to microsft it will get fixed and u get a free game goodluck friend

Is it three red lights?

If so, you have 'the red ring of death'

If your box is less than 3 years old, Microsoft will fix it for free.

that would be the widely known ring of death it happens to alot of pepole that buy it u dont even have to harm the xbox in any way for it to happen mine is currently undergoing this problom but ive yet to look into if it needs to be paid for to be repared knowing microsoft they will try to milk evry dime out of you but it would be best to go look into customer services on thare web site and find out exactly what problom it is it usedly tells u by how many lights on the front are blinking one two three or four i think they said sometheing about a warenty when i looked but then again alot of pepole are saying that they will repar it at any givin time so i have no clue but dont worry ur about one in a million thta this occurs too and if u replace it it proboly will not be the last time u do microsoft seems to of somehow made 360s have the magical power to die at any time sorry but then again the other systems out thare are not any better in form of entertainment in my eyes (not to "diss" the ps3 or wii lovers im shure thare great systems) but i  would stick with the xbox nomater how many times it blows up in ur face.........okay i got away from the point so im done rambiling hope i helped and ignore my spelling errors =]

Could be the RRoD "Red Ring of Death" due to hardware problems caused by excessive heat & other factors such as console placement

If you bought your console in 2006 or onward then you will still be covered by the 3 year extended warranty for the RRoD

If you are in the UK call 0800 587 1102, i phoned them the other day about my RRoD 360, you give them some details, name, address & the xbox serial number on the back of your console, they send you a plain box to ship it in, bubble wrap the console up aswell to try and avoid further damage

Hi Lisa

This can mean a number of different things depending on how may lights are showing!

If there is 1 red light it means that you have the E74 error which is a scaler chip error.

2 red lights is overheating, try vacuming the dust out of the system and it may work for you.

3 red lights is General Hardware Failure and this happens when the 2 main chips that deal with all the processing of data overheat.

4 red lights means that the AV cable is not plugged in properly or is faulty check this and it should work.
